EVERY GIRL WANTS A SKIRT LIKE FRIDA'SWhat does Frida Kahlo and a “ chilanga” living in Vancouver have in common? Nothing really, except that both were born in Mexico City. But for Honoria Delgado Frida Kahlo represents everything that keeps her from finding happiness. It's Halloween in Vancouver, where Honoria's been living for six years. Dressed as her nemesis Frida Kahlo, because she can't think of anything else to wear, she is on the way to a costume party. While waiting for her loyal but always unpunctual friend Jane to pick her up, she drinks tequila, dances, reminisces about her family in Mexico City, her failed marriage with a guy from Kamloops, and her self-discoveries in Canada. Honoria's story is about wanting to take responsibility for your life. In the end, through love and inspiration from a surprising source, she learns to simply live. “Every Girl Wants A Skirt Like Frida's is my first work as a playwright and I'm thrilled that it will premiere at the Fringe in the festival's 20th anniversary year,” says Paula Rivera . “I'm originally from Mexico and in creating Honoria, a Mexican woman living in Canada who is obsessed with Frida Kahlo, I drew upon my early experiences in the country. Having Jerry Ciccoritti on board has made this experience even more exciting. His talent as a director has truly brought the piece to life,” she continues. “I've missed the theatre and all its magic,” shares director Jerry Ciccoritti. “There's nothing so demanding for a director as a bare stage, a spotlight and an actor speaking lines - it forces you to bring your ‘A' game. There's a new wave of immigrant experiences out there and Paula Rivera's story about this Chilanga rides the crest. I'm thrilled to return to the theatre with this joyous piece.” Arriba Las MaNos is a new theatre company founded by Latin Americans who don't want to tell Latin American immigration stories. Every Girl Wants A Skirt Like Frida's is executive produced by Derrick Chua, and produced by Antonella LaCaprara . |
